The Mysterious Origin of the 4 Formaggi Pizza
The 4 Formaggi Pizza, or Four Cheese Pizza, has a history that dates back to the very roots of pizza in Italy. Although there’s no clear consensus on its birthplace, it is believed that the recipe originated in the Campania region, home to the famous Neapolitan pizza.
Some say this delicacy began delighting taste buds in small family pizzerias before gaining national and international popularity. Legend has it that the 4 Formaggi Pizza was born out of a pizzaiolo’s creativity. Faced with the difficult choice of which cheese to use on his pizzas, he decided not to choose and combined four varieties, creating this delicious masterpiece.
Ingredients of the 4 Cheese Pizza
What makes the 4 Formaggi Pizza so special? The answer lies in the careful selection of cheeses that come together to create a symphony of flavours:
- Mozzarella: Made from cow’s milk, it is characterised by its soft, elastic texture and its delicate, slightly sweet flavour.
- Gorgonzola: A type of Italian blue cheese made from cow’s milk. Known for its strong and tangy flavour as well as its creamy and smooth texture.
- Emmental: A hard cheese with large holes, originating from the Emme Valley (Switzerland). It is famous for its mild and slightly sweet flavour.
- Parmigiano: A hard cheese made from cow’s milk, known for its intense flavour and granular texture.
The Perfect Pairing
Don’t forget to pair your 4 Formaggi Pizza with a good glass of Italian wine to complete your experience. Italian white wines from Triveneto are known for their freshness, fruitiness, and aromatic qualities, making them perfect for pairing with light dishes like salads, pasta, and, of course, pizza.
In particular, the 4 Formaggi Pizza pairs wonderfully with these wines. The combination of creamy, mild cheeses with strong, salty ones makes more citrusy and acidic wines an ideal choice. Check out our wine menu.
