Amaretto is an Italian liqueur made from bitter almonds, sugar, and alcohol. Its origins date back to the Renaissance, specifically to the city of Saronno. According to legend, a widow created the original recipe to thank an artist who had painted a fresco of the Virgin in her church. The original recipe was kept secret for many years but was eventually sold to the Reina family, who began producing the liqueur commercially.
Did you know that the word "Amaretto" means "little bitter" in Italian? It’s believed that the name reflects the fact that Amaretto liqueur is made from bitter almonds.
