What is Grappa?

Grappa is a digestive liqueur made from grape pomace, produced and distilled exclusively in Italy. It is often considered a brandy typically consumed before or after meals. Its origin dates back to the Middle Ages, when rural communities distilled this beverage to make use of harvest leftovers and stay warm during long winter days.

The Meaning of the Word “Grappa”

While there are many theories about its etymology, it is widely accepted that it originates from the medieval word “raspus,” meaning hook, which later evolved into variations like “graspo” or “graspa.” In some regions of Veneto, these terms translate to "bunch of grapes." These variations reflect its rural origins, as the technique for making grappa was passed down among Italian farmers in various regions.

The Forbidden Legacy of Alchemy

Although controversial during the Middle Ages, alchemy contributed to the development of effective distillation processes used to create medicines, remedies, liqueurs, and occasionally drugs. This practice built on ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian traditions that already employed distillation for producing wines and other alcoholic beverages for medicinal purposes. Despite the Church’s skepticism toward alchemy, figures like Pope Boniface VIII relied on alchemist physicians to treat their ailments. Thanks to these experiments, the foundation for creating new blends and distillates was laid.

Origins of Italian Grappa

According to various sources, the official origin of grappa dates back to 1779, when the Nardini family opened their first distillery in Bassano del Grappa, becoming the first to officially produce grappa. This new Italian liqueur was a resounding success and quickly spread to other regions like Veneto and Piedmont with the opening of new distilleries. Today, there are over 130 grappa producers in Italy.
