What is Grappa?

Grappa is a digestive liquor made from grape pomace, produced and distilled exclusively in Italy. It is usually considered a spirit that is consumed after or before meals. Its origin dates back to the medieval period, among the rural population that distilled this drink to make use of the waste from the grape harvest and to keep warm during long winter days.

The Meaning of the Word “Grappa”

Although there are many theories about its etymology, it is accepted that it comes from the medieval word “raspus,” which means hook, and over time gave rise to variations such as “graspo” or “graspa,” which in some regions of Veneto translates to "bunch of grapes." These variations are due to its rural origin, whose production was passed down among Italian peasants from various regions.

The Forbidden Legacy of Alchemy

Alchemy, although controversial in the Middle Ages, contributed to the development of an effective distillation process to create medicines, remedies, liqueurs, and occasionally drugs. This practice was based on ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian traditions, which already used distillation to produce wines and other types of alcoholic beverages for medicinal purposes. Although the church viewed alchemy with suspicion, figures like Pope Boniface VIII turned to alchemist physicians to treat their ailments. Thanks to these experiments, the foundations were laid for developing new blends and distillates.

Origins of Italian Grappa

According to various studies, the official origin of grappa dates back to the year 1779 when the Nardini family opened its first distillery in Bassano del Grappa, being the first to officially produce grappa. This new Italian liquor was a resounding success and quickly expanded to other regions such as Veneto and Piedmont with the opening of new distilleries. Currently, there are more than 130 producers of grappa in Italy.
