1. The Oldest Pasta Dish

Did you know that lasagna is actually one of the oldest pasta dishes in history? This dish has existed for centuries, dating back to ancient Rome. In fact, it is mentioned in the writings of famous Roman poets, demonstrating how long it has been capturing people’s hearts.

In Italy, lasagna is considered a festive dish prepared for special occasions. It is commonly found on tables during Christmas, weddings, and other significant events. In some regions of Italy, such as Emilia-Romagna, a special version of lasagna called lasagna alla bolognese is prepared, made with meat sauce and béchamel.

2. The Original Lasagna Was Vegetarian

Although lasagnas with meat are common today, the original Italian lasagna was vegetarian. The recipe dates back to the 13th century and was made with layers of pasta alternated with vegetables like spinach, aubergines, and artichokes, accompanied by ricotta and grated cheese.

Meat was added later, during the Renaissance, when lasagna began to gain popularity outside of Italy. In the 16th century, with the arrival of tomatoes in Italy, the famous tomato sauce—a staple of Italian pasta—was added to this recipe.

This dish is an example of how gastronomy can influence and be influenced by different cultures and culinary traditions, allowing for evolution and adaptation:

  • Moussaka: One example of this influence can be found in Greek cuisine, which uses a similar layering technique with aubergine and meat in its signature dish, moussaka.

3. World Lasagna Day

This Italian recipe even has a special day dedicated to it. World Lasagna Day is celebrated every year on 29th July, where Italians gather to exchange recipes and enjoy different versions of the dish. This day aims to promote Italian culinary culture and highlight the importance of lasagna in global gastronomy.
