Are you in the mood to try an Italian pizza with a completely different twist from traditional pizzas? Then the Bismarck Pizza will be a whole new discovery for you. A speciality of Italian cuisine, it offers a completely unique flavour experience. The Bismarck is easily recognised by the fried egg that crowns the centre of the dough, accompanied by delicious ham, tomatoes, and mozzarella. Although many people have heard of it at some point, the reality is that very few truly know the history, tributes, and curiosities behind it. Are you ready to uncover its mysterious curiosities?
The Origin of the Name Bismarck
The pizza’s name is a tribute to German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1815–1898), one of the most influential historical figures in Germany’s history. Specifically, Bismarck’s great achievement was uniting 39 German states under one flag, earning him the title of “Iron Chancellor” for his determination.
Apart from being a great general in the Prussian army, another of his remarkable feats was creating the Triple Alliance with the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This military and political movement was designed to isolate enemies like France and was later joined by Italy. Bismarck was also known for his fondness for eggs (it’s said he ate half a dozen a day). As a result, some Italian chefs decided to honour him by naming a cooking style “alla Bismarck,” where fried eggs are the main ingredient.
A Rather Curious Historical Error
Building on the previous curiosity, it’s known that Otto von Bismarck often delivered speeches in the allied nations he visited. On one occasion, shortly after the Triple Alliance (1862), he gave a brief speech in the Italian parliament, emphasising that “Blut und Eisen” (blood and iron) were needed for the cause. Italian interpreters translating the Chancellor’s speech mistakenly translated the word “Eisen” as “Eier,” which means eggs. This humorous mix-up led Italians to honour his legacy with eggs.
